Volvo TMD 22 engine origins?

I know that:

a) many marine engines came from tractor engines

b) Volvo marine parts are stoooopid expensive

I have a new to me boat with a Volvo TMD 22 engine that doesn't need a new exhaust elbow, but with replacement Volvo parts at ~$500 - ~$500 I am planning ahead. It seems that a land based part (if at a more reasonable price for a non-Volvo engine) could be sourced and then have the water inject port drilled and tapped at a more reasonable price everyon would win (except Volvo).

Thanks!

I'd suggest taking your old elbow to your local machine shop and have them make one out of stainless, I had mine made for $100 3 years and over 1000 hours ago and its been working like a charm with no corrosion.

The originals always seem to rust out quickly, especially if the boat sits for long periods. I've seen it a few times, one of which was a 10 year old yanmar..

When somebody marinizes a land engine the typical items added are:

- water cooled exhaust manifold

- salt water pump

- different alternator

- water cooled exhaust elbow.

You'll usually have to go to the manufacturer for the first one. You can use steel pipe fittings welded to the old exhaust elbow flange. Doesn't have to be stainless steel.

True, I just figured if I'm already having someone fabricating it, might as well spend the extra 20 or so bucks on materials to make it last forever (or as long as the engine anyways)

Believe it or don't the mild steel does about as well as s.s. in an environment of hot corrosive salt water + exhaust gases. Either way, use schedule 80 pipe (thicker wall) instead of sch 40.

If you are in Mazatlan still there is a highly recommend fabricator there.  Know a few boats who got new exhaust elbows made and one that did all new chain plates and a bunch of other work.  Don't have a contact have to ask around.  I think the elbow was for a Volvo.

I don't need any parts now, I'd just like to know what other engines that use the same or many of the same parts. Going to an industrial supply or agricultural parts shop is likely way cheaper.

I have seen some mentions on line which may indicate the Volvo TMD22 is a Perkins Prima block with other parts bolted on as necessary.

Thanks! It's a start. I think that Perkins date back to some sort of tractor. As I said, I don't need parts any time soon, I'd rather pay regular price than green powder coat price.
