VOR '17-'18 - THE GAME

East is always so tempting.  Sucks you in then leaves you drifting.   I started east in the Vendee but then bailed and got lucky going down the middle.  Worked OK.  But not a lot of sleep in the doldrums when you are looking to catch each puff so you can get the F out of there.

I'm currently 20nm +/-  due east of Your Mom trying to decide when to pull the trigger to go south.

That was my one big worry.  With the game not putting up any winds less than 4 kts, some very unrealistic results could occur, including potentially an East Atlantic win.  I think it will result in a lot of boats being WAY ahead of the Westies for a LOT longer than usual.  Usually, the Westies will pass them a few days after the equator.  Now...  it might be in the last 2-3 days of the leg.  But I'm still pretty confident West (or West-Center) will win.  I think East will only have a chance if there are land-effect shifts on the African coast allowing boats to sail down the coast without short-tacking.  Have fun with that.  I'd rather be crushing along at 20+ knots in the South Atlantic.

The bigger issue with the 4 kt limit is that you don't really have to hunt for a good wind bridge across the doldrums.  You just have to look for a place where the 4 kts is at a decent angle.  Not a realistic representation of what the real VOR navigators need to do.

Did a Zezo comparison between my current position and Get Rhythm in the east.  Right now Zezo has me passing Fernando a day before Get Rhythm.  Not sure if Zezo takes the 4knt minimum into account but I like where we are compared to our friends back east, currently.

I'm making my push west (which is probably a fruitless endeavour), as I see my last lane of breeze before I'm completely mired. I may be completely wrong, and may have dug too deep into the coast. Here's to taking a chance and trying to consolidate on you westerly bunch.

pretty crucial gybe last night for deciding our lanes basically to the doldrums. Not a great one to be asleep for but seems to have gone ok. I ultimately committed to the west because i couldn't find any lane back across east once you had committed to it so you'd be going upwind the entire south atlantic.  A bit scary as the routing disagreed for the first 4 hours but seems ok now.

Going to be an entertaining battle between the mini group we've got going!

Indeed a crucial gybe and my programmation cards worked, so that is a first.  Mr Bitches has been displaced from the top of the pile.

I think the Black Boat should follow any of those routing options - blind trust in technology is the way to go.

Regarding Wethog's comment, yes, Zezo accounts for the 4-kt minimum.

Nice work @HKG1203.  Good thing I have a few thousand miles to chase you down.

As far as I can tell, my mistake was going East of Madeira.  It would appear that a bunch of boats that went West of Madeira are ahead of me.  iona29 is the best I know of, but Tipapacheri and HKG1203 are both looking very strong.  I'm not aware of anyone ahead of me who went East of Madeira.  (By "ahead", I mean ahead on a line toward FdN).

For those worried about the eastern gang, take solace in the fact that Ozzy85 is currently doing 8.4kts and Rule69 is doing 8.6kts!  Only four hundred and something miles to make up!

- 7 and 1/2 days into the current Clipper leg I have 29 weather, 12 stealth and 12 help cards.  

- 6 and 1/2 days into the 2nd leg of the mini I have 22 weather, 18 auto sail and 13 stealth cards. 

These two races I have no options beyond radio and polish, just doing the bare minimum to compete.  So I am not using the random cards I get every 8 hours, I always go for the 4 card option.  I listed the top 3 cards I have for each race.  Just thought it was interesting how much of the cards I get are not cards I could use most.  Way points and navigation.  Coincidence?   :lol:

La Semillante TPN is looking pretty good. They put 3 miles on me by going deeper into the NW than me. What are we thinking about Breitling and the other southern boats.
