Wonder if they will take Flyer 1 for a spin with some of the crew from Flyer 1 & 2 ....some serious grey haired talent amoungst that lot.

So, Dee held an exciting presentation at the boat show in Gothenburg today. Martin Stormberg also participated, with a very pregnant Anna Lena as host. About the teams and crews, Martin is trying to put together a team, and commented that he thinks that most will add women but under 30, to combine two requirements. So bad news for Dee. She said she is trying hard to find a spot in a team.

.. commented that he thinks that most will add women but under 30, to combine two requirements..
Well - if that aint a slap in the face for the perceived abilities of under 30's and women, I don't know what is.
Let's see how this plays out. But yes, strange it was to see Dee presenting her impressive career and then realize that maybe that's enough to get on a Volvo team. Very sad but also very real and good for the younger generation.

Yep, no need to take a couple of young lads any more. This time it we have to take along a pretty young cook and chambermaid, just like on a superyacht!

There is certainly a bright side. Another 20 years of that trend (female and under 30) and the males will drop out by default. No new talent going through the VOR school. :D

Chasm is possibly correct. The losers from combining the female and under 30 categories are going to be young male sailors. Allowing the combination of the categories is probably something the VOR didn't think through. It effectively nullifies one of the two rules that is intended to keep the cohort of sailors fresh and inclusive.

OTOH, a cohort of young talented women being groomed for the VOR is no bad thing.

Can't they just race around the world without all this social engineering, PC bullshit?

Next thing, VOR will want to recruit at least one non-specific gender identity crew members - so the boats will need to carry at least a blue, pink and white bucket. I won't even mention an additional requirement for the mandatory designated 'safe-space' aboard.

X2 but everyone & every company has an angle.

I'd like to see a more amateur level round the world race. VOR is too corporate & too regulated.

Run what you brung, wallys, swans, TP's, RP 50-65's, SC70's etc etc staggered start like the transpac. Maybe 30-40'ers doing double handed.

Cynically, one would say that the core point of the crew rules in the VOR is not about any sort of equality agenda at all. It is all about long term survival of the race.

The rules about required rule members have a prime purpose of ensuring that in the future, there are crew members available to fill the positions needed to keep the race viable. Getting new blood into the race has already clearly delivered dividends. ABN Amro 2 showed the way. Otherwise the race will suddenly vanish as all the geriatric has-beens hang up their wet weather gear, and the experience needed to build and run a team on the water is lost. Adding women to the mix is a similar question. The future of the race is not best served with boats filled with blokes. The VOR will never break out of its current narrow space of sponsors and followers if it does remain a bloke driven race. It is simple long term business sense to nurture the crew members that one needs for the future vision of the race. So far there hasn't been a need to mandate an international mix of crew members, sponsors tend to mandate that they see a national or two on a boat anyway. But clearly the need to build a base of crew that isn't dominated by aussies and kiwis (especially with no Oz boat) will have featured in the minds of the VOR management.

I agree that the loss of Corinthian competition is sad. I guess it is a race that really doesn't provide much opportunity for it. Not many privateers have the money or spare time. Adventurers have the Clipper now. Rich sailors with a bit of time go IMOCA.

Safe Space on a VOR Boat - That cracks me up!

Not the first and certainly not the last time:Imoca boats have sheltered safe space where the solo sailor can get protection from wind and waves.

In the already build VOR 70's they prefer flush decks.

Since safety and comfort are high standards on VOR ships.

Why not provide the same sheltered spaces on board the VOR 70's?

Might this be the reason that the VOR isn't as popular as it was in the past

where luxury cruisers like Flyer 1 and 2 were used.

I am not saying VOR has to go back to luxury cruisers but IMOCA 60

is just a better ship at the moment.

Innovation can lead to more comfort and safety of the new VOR ships after the 2017 edition.

Perhaps a retractable doghouse that protects the crew when necessary?
