I suppose they could rig up some sort of preventer when becalmed somewhere just to keep it from flopping around but it would most likely cause havoc with a crash gybe.  This is one of the better ones.

If we looked at the VOR65 boom configurations, with the simple reinforced loop that slings over the boom for the traveler - it is all about simplicity and ease of repair/designed point of failure. Don't want the boom to have something ripped out of it, don't want deckware removed - let the loop do its thing and absorb the load, and if it dies - simple to replace.

I don't think ppl often appreciate how much shock load a mainsail that size will do to a preventer line ppl routinely rig to a mid-ship cleat. Flying cleat and line - will probably injure and kill someone in a crash.

Shrug. You can always apply to be the safety officer.

Ok, let others chime in, we have all the room as this thread is coming to an end anyway.
A head, a real one, is a pretty important piece of equipment and cannot be replaced easily.
In my crew's case it took a neuro-surgeon quite a while to get it back in shape.

More good Witt: "corporate prawns" ! :)

Things got off to a pretty crazy start, with the boats racing through the spectator fleet…

We just did our best to get through it – I saw Dee’s reaction and she seemed a bit more shocked than we were. We’ve been steering our 100 footer through traffic for a while, so it’s all part and parcel for us. I’m sure the spectators got a good look at the racing – I almost got a prawn in my mouth at one stage from one of the corporate boats!

Oh yeah! Thanks!

I think I'll add a sheet to my spreadsheet that lists videos from VOR central, the teams, and anyone else (like Nic Douglass) posting relevant stuff to YouTube or Facebook or wherever.

In the wild.
Anyone see any press reaction in the Dutch news to AkzoNobel performance in the race?
Not really. A friend in Amsterdam is mailing me all the relevant newspaper articles and it is still all  about how badly AkzoNobel company handled this sponsorship deal. They are glad that there is a Dutchman on the Dutch boat again. Many people suggested to boycot Akzo and remove their International antifouling from their bottoms (pun...).

Otherwise they are quite happy with Akzo's and Simeon's 4th place, and wondering how they will continue. And somewhat disappointed with Brunel's 6th place of course.

i've been getting a lot of alerts with Akzo corporate stuff.  "Headwinds in our marine division" cited as one of the reasons they missed earning so bad, and still smarting from the whole PPG deal and associated expenses and PR hangover.  Interesting days ahead.

Okay... Confused myself. Apparently there is damage to both Scallywag and Brunel. Brunel's Rudder, or at least one of them had been given another coat of Orange Speed Coating, but no info on whether they had additional damage requiring a haul out, with the required permission and/or penalties. Scallywag's reported bulb gouge, (according to j-funk) may. require a haul out, (maybe) or might be repaired in the water. I wonder how an in the water repair might be done and if it will be good enough that it does not slow them down. Drama. Pins and needles. Inquiring mind(s).

Really just trying to avoid seeing other depressing news and political chaos elsewhere. (everywhere)
