Was possibly smart not to start this edition of the Mug Race.

At the start, those who happened to be on the west side of the river-wide start line soon got a puff and a big port tack lift and were GONE. By the time the folks who had gone right or middle at the start got to the first big bend in the river, the left group was out of sight around the next bend, two miles away. And it got worse, as the front group kept what wind there was for longer.

I was sailing a salvaged Hunter 170. Handicap 92.7. It took until 6:00 PM to get to the midway gate bridge. Finished after 13 hours, an hour after the sundown time limit. (And I had won this event in 2018 on a Raider.)

So, if the EVO had been to the left, good. Right? 40 of the 78 boats didn't finish.

This week-end I have been sailing next to a brand new VX EVO in Germany. The relatively long hull makes it look great and sail pretty fast in light winds!  :)

Uh-oh. I wonder if that's Covid supply constraints or something else leading to the downturn. Wouldn't think they would remove it from the website if that were the case. I missed out on a used one close to my area about a month ago.

I tried to buy a boat earlier this year and the dealer was not responsive. Decided that if its that hard to buy one there was no way I would get support when I broke a spar or foil so i went a different direction. Love the idea of the boat, wish it was more of a real thing.

It was very much a real thing, Ovation has pulled out though and it sounds like Brian is aligning a new vendor. His son runs things in the US.

Surprised that we haven't heard a word from Vela. Hopefully McKay is the next Evo builder. Good boat.

I had the opportunity to sail an VX Evo this week-end :-D

In the light air I could hold off a well sailed Musto Skiff on a W/L-course, so it is seriously quick for a non-trapeze boat.

It would be very sad if they couldn't get it into production again.

Hi all,

My apologies for not jumping in sooner. Thank you for the interest and comments. VX EVO is very much alive. Some changes and logistics challenges have been addressed.
Here is the scoop: Vela is still the official importer of the VX Evo in the US. The sole builder used to be Ovington Boats , LTD. based in the UK, until early summer. Due to capacity production issues and a crazy level of demand for several of the Olympic boats they (Ovington) make, Brian Bennett who is still very much involved with the boat as well as the VX One, moved the molds to New Zealand and they are already there, on their way to Mackay Boats.
We did have a main delay in late 2021 and 2022 due to the same issue plus the fact that Ovington moved to a new and larger facility, hence the bottle neck and delay on delivery.

We have a confirmed container coming in from Ovington, departing on September 14th loaded with ILCAs and 4 VX Evos, all of them already sold.
4 More VX Evos on the pipeline at Mackay and expected to be in the US in early Spring 2023.

At no point the VX Evo has been shut down. We have had a delay on delivery and I have not been around SA as much as I need to.

More as soon as boats are here.

Thanks again to the SA family.
