Last night a young family friend and I were texting about his new work at a for-profit math tutoring place and it took me quite a while to realize he was describing an interaction with one student rather than a group of students. I asked him why he was using they/them about this student, and he replied that he figured he'd best get in the habit because it'd be "less likely to bite me in the ass". I told him that was admirable but it's best to address folks they way they ask and if they don't express a preference then go with the obvious.
