Looks to me like pausing the work for further investigation would be justified.
The article doesn't really give a definite link, or even a strong correlation, between whale deaths and the construction; but in an already-below-unsustainable population these whale deaths need a solid explanation.

Orsted, the Danish wind power developer tabbed to build two of the three offshore wind projects approved thus far in the waters off New Jersey, said its current work off the New Jersey coast does not involve using sounds or other actions that could disturb whales.

It did not say what specific type of work it is doing off New Jersey and did not answer that question in an email to The Associated Press on Friday.

The Clean Ocean Action environmental group said such site work typically involves exploring the ocean floor using focused pulses of low-frequency sound in the same frequency that whales hear and communicate, which could potentially harm or disorient the animals.

This really should not be a Republicans-Vs-Democrats thing.

tough call as there is no data other than the 7 dead whales at this point, I did not hear of this happening up in Block Island where the only 5 operating US offshore WTG's are located

WTG = Wind Turbine Generator

That population is considered not endangered and has recovered significantly since being classified as such in the 70s.

It would be better if they weren't harmed, of course.

Humpbacks, you're correct... sorry, I was thinking of right whales. Humpbacks are still pretty rare tho'

I can see that happening with sound waves and the whales swim the wrong way so to speak. You would think a local govt could demand the commercial company describe their work. Post mortem on an animal that large seems challenging.

A worthwhile topic.

A worthwhile topic on PA, where topics tend to devolve into a food fight?

Guess we'll find out.

I don't think savoring whales is a topic for PA, better in GA = gastronomical anarchy where everything is grilled. Except Eskimo pies.

“They have said it’s been happening at an increased rate since 2016, and that was long before there was any offshore wind activity,” the governor said. “It looks like some of these whales have been hit by vessels.”

A rather more likely cause. There is a huge number of offshore wind farms in Europe and we have not seen any big whale mortality associated with them.

@nolatom = sorry about the d/v = fixed and blame fat fingers.
edit: I didn't realize the d/v was still here, thought it went away during an upgrade.

Dead whales taste like Penguins, if you put enough ketchup on them! Or we could go with windmills or focused Solar, and kill the birds! There is no such thing as Free Energy!
