Ed shares the heartbreaking story on the FP of another non-profit getting the shaft from private commercial interest. It's not just Miami, Dago or Frisco any longer. Hell, waterfront property ANYWHERE is becoming a gold mine for developers. With a remote workforce enabled cognoscenti cadre of rich folk seeking their own paradise, no little lake or town is safe from developers. The locals, like this story, wake up one day with an eviction notice stuffed in the mail.

What to do? GoFundMe? Unlikely gonna outbid a billionaire, even in large numbers. What the evicted person needs do is enlist an attorney and fight the eviction in court and through influence peddling, just like the developer. Enlist your army of social media warriors to harangue and cajole the local and state officials with the power to make laws. You can't outspend them, so outlaw them.

Mr. Clean, you wanna get the ball rolling with some local attorney and political activist? I'd recommend starting with Bernie Sanders of course.

I signed my half of the family property ( Stockholm archepellargo, by the Baltic sea ) over to my brother , who has got children, before jumping ship and moving abroad to retire from my previous life.
So, not my problem anymore. The place will increase and increase in value as time passes by, I think it is better to keep the property close to the ”core” of the family instead of splitting it half by half with the generations. I’ll just be the forgotten uncle, and I’m happy with that.
(though, I’ll miss the Hobie14t I Ieft behind. Hope the kids and their offspring will enjoy it).

That's the principle that the Euro dynasties were built on - the eldest son got everything so the family estates and fortunes remained intact.

Rather that than to see my wife’s second second cousins getting their greedy teeth into it.
I bought my share of that part of MY familj out to avoid the property being splitted into pieces, and it would be a pity to let it happen just earn some pennies. I’ll (probably) manage anyway.

This ABSOLUTLEY sucks.

As a sailor, and a former lawyer who dealt with commercial leasing, you know what else sucks? Building a successful organization on LEASED property with no contingency or backup plan for when your lease runs out, or gets terminated.

It's terrible, but this was a foreseeable problem that could have been avoided years ago with some diligence.

I doubt it'd be an option for many, but would having a location added to the National Register of Historic Places help any?

That's what stopped me buying "my" boatyard 20 years ago. Spending 6 figures on a business totally dependent on being on the water that could be homeless in short order was not going to happen.

In Boston Harbor, I think there is only one marina that is wholly owned and not leased through Massport. My marina has a lease, and every time it comes time to renew, Massport makes it harder, I'm sure because they want to tender other offers of development.

What is to be done has been done before?

Eat the rich!

They barely pay taxes and empirically denude everything that has value and when the money train seems to stop, find ways to rent seek on existing products and services.

The pitch forks and torches should have been put to use during the last recession.

In Sander's backyard, so ya, there's a chance we may actually EAT the rich, RAW and get some relief (and indigestion).

That was the one thing that I couldn't forgive Obama for - letting those Wall Street scum not only get away with it but handing them more billions from which they paid themselves huge bonuses for almost crashing the entire world economy.

WTF happened there? Who had him by the balls?
