What Does Gun Violence Really Cost?

Getting back to the OP;

Canada gunshot death rate - 1.94 per 100,000 people

USA gunshot death rate - 12.21 per 100,000 people.

Now who did you say had the right idea?
Not sure why this was posted in the thread about Canada's ban on battlefield .22's.

I'm going to assume the stats came from here.

As usual, per the OP of this thread, grabbers are using mostly suicides to argue for bans on battlefield .22's.

I don't see the correlation. Most suicides only require one shot, so it seems to me an argument for banning all guns.

As for who has the "right idea" on suicides, Canada and the US have pretty similar rates so I'm not sure there's a clear "winner" on that one.

The thing about that last one is, as this thread has repeatedly shown, that the USA has an unremarkable suicide rate compared to other developed nations and most of those "gun deaths" are suicides.

Just more gungrabby number padding, meaningless to anyone who knows that some of the strictest gun control laws in the world don't prevent Japan from having a much higher suicide rate than we have.

Such ignorance. One only has to google Japan, and suicide in Japan, for five minutes to understand there can no fair comparison between the suicides in these different cultures.

Tom, you should be ashamed to repeat this idea in public. But you are the Dogballs.

Report just in: You're far, far more likely to die of gun violence in a state that voted for Trump than a state that didn't. When it's >100% more likely and a couple dozen white kids are slaughtered in tenneflorabamassippi, the dam will break. Not before then. Some stats here https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/gun-violence-republican-states-rural-b2129435.html

Perhaps but the way to avoid death from most gun violence is the same as it has been since this thread was started:

Don't self-murderize yourself! Problem solved! And without any big, stupid prohibition programs aimed at peaceful people who harm no one.

Is the suicide rate among US veterans as high as Japan's rate?
The newest numbers show that the U.S. rate is 44 members a day. The government tends to group numbers by period, for instance, from 2010 to 2016, which blurs the facts. It is still a difficult number to reckon with.

On 2019, that figure stood at 17 members per day. In 2001, it was 14.4 per day. Today, a whopping 25% of American suicides are veterans.

Are Veterans at a Higher Risk for Suicide?

The suicide rate for veterans is 1.5 times higher than that of the general population.4

Comparing the rate among female veterans to non-Veteran adult women, the rate is 2.5 times higher.5 From 2001 to 2014, the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) reports an increased suicide rate among women using VA health services from 14.4 per 100,000 to 17.3 per 100,000.6

Suicide rates are especially high among older veterans. According the VA, in 2016, about 58% of all veterans committed suicide were among Veterans age 55 years or older.4

About 20 veterans commit suicide a day, and nearly three quarters are not under VA care.4

Those are pretty astounding figures, and it's also very interesting that 3/4 of veterans are not under VA care. I know that modern veterans are treated much differently than veterans of my era. For example, Afghanistan vets are rated before they leave the service and are instructed to register with the VA.

Such is ignorance. Are you not the proud recipient of a National Merit Scholarship endowment?

Go find out for yourself. Study the subject for a few hours. This will cause growth, and you will stop comparing suicide between vastly differing cultures.

(Apply your once-fine mind, then STFU about suicide in Japan.)

Americanos looking more like Honduras every day.

"A Philadelphia gas station owner fed up with incessant crime threatening his employees and customers hired heavily armed security guards to watch over his business.

Neil Patel, operator of a Karco gas station at Broad and Clearfield streets in North Philadelphia, recruited Pennsylvania S.I.T.E Agents clad with Kevlar vest and AR-15s or shotguns.

"They are forcing us to hire the security, high-level security, state level," Patel told FOX 29. "We are tired of this nonsense; robbery, drug trafficking, hanging around, gangs." "

That seems a lot more related to the stupid drug war than to the suicides that are the topic of this thread.

With all the states allowing right to carry (23) without permits
We should have a fun year breaking all previous records
and were off to a good start!

We're Only One Day into 2023 and Already This Many Americans Have Been Shot

View attachment 564690
Across the United States 193 people were shot on New Years Day, with 56 of them dying, according to data from the Gun Violence Archive, which records shootings across the country.
List favorite shooting of the day:
This really needed a whole new thread?

We already have a thread about self murders using guns.

The US continues to have an unremarkable suicide rate, especially compared to extremely gungrabby countries like Japan, and even compared to only somewhat gungrabby countries like Canada and Australia.

Or in Tom's inimitable styling, self-murder.
Actually, I think it was jocal who started trying to convince everyone that suicide is gun violence by calling it self murder.

I go along with gungrabby ideas like battlefield .22's and self murder and people get upset at me, not the grabbers who originated the ideas. It's almost like they don't really believe that banning guns will solve suicides and they don't really believe that .22's are suitable militia weapons. Weird.

Hi Tom...

I used the term ONCE. You weaponized it, mocking the gun suicides... which you also facilitiate. You are a piece of work, IMO.

(Dogballs goes full gibberish)

Weird content, yes.

Suicide has been used as a persistent straw man aroud here: even a 60% suicide rate does not excuse the other 40%. With suicides as an active, pathetic distraction, we're (not) talking about the 18,000 current gun homicides per year. The gun violence epidemic. This number stood at a terrible 11.5K thru severala years of our discussions.

According to fresh Pew research, this homicide number is up effing 50% in the last two years, and up 75% over the last ten. The homicide number in the USA hasn't been this high since 1968.

And the new 49% suicide rate is relative...it's down partly because of the spiking of our homicides.
