This reminds me of my DREAM boat...

One that has upwind vmg as good as it's downwind vmg. Think, a completely circular polar.

Although that's easily "achieved" with 4ktsb... But you know what I mean.

The only sailboats that currently do this are the circus clown (AC) boats.

Would love to go, say, 12kts whichever way i point it.

Dern near what the 12 meters did. 9 knots-ish regardless of wind speed or wind direction.

Tried to ask this before but people don’t seem to like giving simple answers. I know its not a simple topic bit please humor me…..

How fast is fast upwind? Lets say in a racing boat like a j80 or take your pick. In decent 10-15 kt wind with reasonable 1 ft waves. You can even express it as a percentage of hull speed. What is a decent VMG directly upwind?

Just a ballpark estimate is fine. Some speed that would make you say “that boat goes to windward like a freight train!”
The answer to this question is always 747

That's the definition of a 6 Meter. It goes 6 knots in whatever direction you point it. Which makes it a very boring boat, except on the beat, when it's exciting because you can't see where you're going.

Any boat that does 12 knots upwind is almost certainly going to go faster than that on any other point of sail. Except dead down wind.

As fas as VMG: Catamarans, TP52s, Volvo 70s, Moths, I-14s, tris ... they all have bowtie shaped polars.

No, the Vassar yottie in the navy crop top and wheat capris looks really good doing it. Who cares about a saga or two when it comes to that...

Just doing the math if I assume that sailing at 45 degrees to the wind is average and that gets you about 71% of your speed through the water then anything better than that is “good”. What the PO is not appreciating is that it is rarely this simple. Tide, current, wind conditions all affect the formula and different boats handle these factors differently.

The OP certainly comes over as a total dick.

These are my boats windward targets. I created this list based on a sistership’s ORC polars selecting the highest VMG (self calculated) per wind speed.

Fucked if I know what is good, but if I get near the target speeds I’ll be pretty happy.

If you're getting to the weather mark faster than the guy next to you, you're happy. Its all relative.
