The board. nicknamed "the pancake" builds a aircushion between the board and the watersurface that provide lift and therefore is is drag reducant..
Despite the wider nose it's faster.

The scow bow massively increases the righting moment of the hull. You need less ballast in the keel, hence lower overall weight. It may be fugly, but no worries, you will only see the transom
