Seriously you have never seen battens like that?

Pretty much every race boat over 50ft has them like that. The reason behind it is nothing technical, it is just that with the longer battens, 90 degrees off the leech you just cant fold the sail, you end up with the battens going diagonally thru each fold and it turns into a full clusterfuck, it also means that its hard to put the battens in if the sail is luff flaked as the pockets have a fold in them.

Having them 90 off the luff eliminates this issue completley for a luff flaked sail. It used to only be on the super maxis 5 years ago but now on prety much any 3DL sail with battens over about 1.5m.

(edit) Just noticed that somebody has already said it.... Darn. Too slow.

I have met the builder of this boat, almost had a client buy one! This thing is awesome! All up on the line for under $400K US.

Looking forward to going for a sail next spring I hope.

Considering I haven't sailed on a newer boat over 50 feet with non-overlapping jibs, there's really no surprise that I haven't seen that. Perhaps I haven't paid close enough attention. Moreover, on the boats I have sailed with jib battens, we've just folded the sails along the leech for racing, but when they were put away after a regatta we pulled the battens and properly flaked and bricked the jibs.

Anyways, thanks for the info. Makes perfect sense.
