What's a 'FREE' '88 505 on a trailer worth?

When I drove back, I had to stop.

I got side tracked by the property because it's on one of those properties you could lust after: Secluded 7+ acres, close enough in to society but far enough away from your neighbors, with 30 years of neglect but epic mountain, valley and river views, surrounded by other $3 to $6M estates with buy-in at about $1.3-.5M... Too rich of $ and time for me and not for sale - yet...

Anyway.... One boat tag is from '88 and the other tag is '92. Dark green deck, yellow hull. Trailer has dollie tires! I wonder if the wheel bearings were last used in '92!

I tried to inquire but I couldn't find the front door of what I think was the main house, which had lights on inside and a current registered car in the drive. Several knocks on the house produced nothing.

Those are tiny tires for sure but they're not dolly wheels...just tiny trailer tires.

It's so old and 'not sailed' that the trap handles are wood.

I'm still interested to see if I can contact a human and uncover a boat ID #.

Should be stamped into the transom.

If you could get a picture of it without the cover it's likely that the masses here could ID the maker.

The trailer may be worth more than the cost of dumping the boat, if not for those little tires.

That's easily fixed. I re-wheel most trailers with small tires like that.

I hadn't even gotten that far as I'm not really interested in an ancient 505. I drive by there often and only recently saw the boat by the road.

It looks about as rough as I thought from the peeks I could get.

Let's see what I get back on make and year.

The answer to the question is of course ...zilch!
They should be paying you to take it away. A GRP boat like this currently in South Devon UK costs £160 to legally, correctly feed into the waste system.

Agreed, the trailer could be worth something but likely not... very much depends on local demand.

It could be an epoxy/vac hull, which would make it pretty much immortal. If so, and the spars are sound, it could well be worth rerefitting as a fun/fast daysailor. Lots of decent 2nd hand sails around. Yes you'll spend more on line than you'll be able to sell it for when you're done, but hell sitting in a closet at home isn't free either.

If nobody is interested in refitting an old boat, into the shredder it goes.

Agree with this. I had a temporary Parker while rebuilding a Hamlin and the Parker had this stern and trunk.

Edit: That deck indent seems very specific. And I just found my Parker photos, I'm not so sure anymore. This boat is older than the Parker I had.

Another Parker vote. I had 5216 and the stern and trunk are the same, as is the spin chute. There are those here who are better at IDing 5ohs than I, but it matches my old Parker. If so, the hull number is stamped into that transom crossmember.

This is a general bit of perspective about ALL boats for sale:

The advertised price is the seller’s asking price. The asking price is almost always the largest number the seller believes anyone might eventually pay.
In the case of the “free” asking price the rule remains the same. The current owner is hoping the item will go away without costing him anything.

When I see a boat offered for free I often respond with an offer to make the boat go away. In the case of a 30 foot keelboat floating in a slip, my offer is usually $3000 and that offer is only good if the boat has not been stripped of its rigging and sails.

Why?? It takes me a whole week to haul, strip, and deliver the hull to the dump. I might eventually salvage more value by selling the keel to a recycler. I might eventually sell the fittings snd hardware. Sometimes we can sell a diesel inboard.

But, I have to have the right trailer, hoists, truck, manpower, a facility to store everything which may eventually sell, and it takes lots of time to sell ANYTHING to a bargain hunting sailor.

Summary: if the guy is “selling” the 505 for free. Negotiations should start with , “If you have the trailer and boat titles, I will haul it away for $100. Without titles, I will need $500.”

Just in, the owner's response:

1972 made by Parker. The boat has been on a trailer since around 1992. It needs work, but will be free.

Currently our neighbor is interested. I will let you know if that falls through if you are still interested.
