What's a 'FREE' '88 505 on a trailer worth?

What the hell's wrong with the foredeck, it looks like they slathered on a layer of fiberglass over the whole thing...poorly
Unless it's got a nice set of sails it's not worth crap.

I'm reminded of my neighbour's Hornet, it was a woody, he'd wrapped it in tarp which had leaked, it was also stored in the south sunshine, when I saw it, it had virtually been boiled alive and was delaminating everywhere.
How much water was in this 5oh?

I bet that it's house paint used to change he deck color and it's bubbling and peeling.
Agreed, that looks like paint to me as well, add some pine needles that are embedded into the paint due to being pressed against it over years of heat cycling. There is another shot that shows a white topsides where the paint has pulled off.

The lower quality the paint the better, it will come off with a decent organic solvent or peeler and may have partially preserved the underlying gelcoat from decades of neglect.

Well, It looks like it was done by the Dept. of Forestry at Oregon State University. 😁 ☹️
I'm trying to be optimistic. 505 rebuilds are painful.

I would do it again and I would pick an old boat like this but it wouldn't be a 505 when I was done. Find a shorter, flexible carbon skiff mast, square the main, get rid of the mast ram, reduce the vang purchase and change it to a gnav, reduce the shroud purchase, no headstay tensioner, put on a prod and go asym. Basically get rid of .7 miles of line and reverse bungie pulls and 40lbs of blocks, leads, and other parts. Call it a 555.

Forgot that it would still have bailers... Yeah, no, never again.

But you should buy this free boat and fix it. And post photos. We love to watch others pain.

This actually sounds like a pretty cool boat. I've mused about doing something similar.

Hmmm...I'm working on Waterat 7772 and I have an I14 rig with a gnav and square top main. I'd maybe do it if it wasn't for the 505 Worlds coming up.

I have done a woody Thistle hull #807. Lots of a scraping off the old varnish with remover. In this case not sure if that would work. My Thistle was down in Livermore Ca.

Do it and bring the boat in worlds! If only to get people talking about the possibilities.

I was checking out the old 2009 thread from the 505 Worlds in San Francisco, talking about the carnage, watching the play by play of Mike Martin and @mikeholt, it was a good read. Seems like more fun to have it rigged as a 505 and to join in on the reindeer games.

Next is to look at the average wind speed for late September in San Fran because if it's like that for the 2023 Worlds, we'll get crushed. I don't even know who my skipper or crew is yet so we'll be trying to practice enough all Spring and Summer once the boat is done.

Over there
It was still there yesterday...

What do you think the probability of a '72 hull, sitting with the mast on and warping the foredeck for the last 30 years would hold any tension?
