Can you put a mask on please?
No way man.

Nobody wants to get sick, and nobody wants to get other people sick. By all means keep wearing yours - everyone assumes you have a good reason; maybe you are sick or caring for someone who is especially vulnerable.

Masks work just fine. Indeed, they will probably always be worn in health care now. They spend an awful lot of money on infection control, and masks have made a difference. Obviously, level 1 ppe doesn't protect that well, but sure, it protects a bit.

You always see the numbers on the news about new cases and new hospitalizations. They are scary and they are tragic.

A couple of months ago, at a department meeting, they gave a shout-out to the IT department for setting up video conferencing so that people could say goodbye to their loved ones.

We are still isolating the elderly, and I don't even want to get started on the effects the lockdown has had on children.

When you ask someone to put on a mask, you are asking them to accept and promote the idea that we live in a time of crisis. That crisis is used to abuse the most vulnerable in our society: the very old and the very young.

I will not participate.

Why do you not understand that the sovereign nation of Bermuda does not have to coddle your tiny feelings.

But if you wish to enter their country you must follow their rules.

Or you can just be you and stay home, asshole.

Look, I get it - you're a libertarian and you've drawn your line in the sand. BUT... The NOR was out there with amendment 1 back in March, and it says:
The Bermuda Race Organizing Committee is monitoring the impact of
COVID-19 on race interests and may, at a date closer to the race, announce

health-related requirements including, but not limited to, requiring COVID-
19 tests before and/or after the race and vaccination or other information.

Proof of vaccination and a Mariner’s Travel Authorisation from Bermuda
government authorities will be required for all competitors. It is also
expected that local restrictions and CDC guidelines will be observed in
Newport and Bermuda. See NoR 5.3, 6.2(c), 6.2(d), 13.1, and 14.5.
14.5 goes on to say, in part,
Further, by taking part in any of the events covered by
this NoR, each competitor agrees and acknowledges that they are also responsible for
complying with any regulations in force from time to time in respect of COVID‐19 and
for complying with the COVID‐19 procedures applicable in Rhode Island, Bermuda,
or by virtue of the race rules. Competitors and support persons shall comply with any
reasonable request from an event official. Failure to comply may be misconduct.

Captains should also be prepared to attend meetings/hearings by videoconference
while in Newport and Bermuda.
b. Reasonable actions by event officials to implement COVID‐19 guidance, protocols or
legislation, even if they later prove to have been unnecessary, are not improper actions
or omissions. A boat may not base a request for redress on issues related to any race
or government pandemic‐related restrictions. This changes RRS 62.1.
emphases are mine.
so the information was available to you all the way back in March. You had a pretty good idea that masks were probably going to be required. you had months of your anti-mask convictions to inform your skipper that you had a principled issue with the government and maybe you should sit this one out. Instead, you lost all of your principled credibility not by respectfully declining but by throwing an internationally-recognized tantrum.

To be honest, if I were your skipper it wouldn't matter whether you got pinched under 69. If you left me short-handed for a race like this at the last possible minute, given the time, resources, money that it takes to prepare for something like this, you wouldn't be allowed to send a text to my boat let alone set foot on it.

But hey, you kept your principled stance and seem to have no remorse for your actions. If you can live with the consequences, I'm sure sailing will recover.

Have you considered that the owner may be as whacked as this guy? Don't make assumptions. The owner may be proud of him for all you know.
But even if the owner is the great satan, does not ryley's point stand?

You can believe any crazy thing you want, but you can't fucking race if you fuck up this way.

Or are you suggesting the owner might be quite happy to not race/be short handed IF thier sailors can own the libs in a way that makes the owner happy?

You were mostly making sense until
You totally jumped off with that last paragraph.
My first response to the first sentence is, @No! I Am Not!!””.
Who the hell are you yo tell me what I am thinking?
My reason gir telling people they could not enter my shop without a mask was personal protection, protection for my staff, and protection for visiting customers.
There was no way I hell I could have determined whether my random visitors happened to be exhaling the slobber of death.
My mask rule was about simple math. When the frequency of infection was at its highest, the odds of a sick person visiting my shop suggested one visitor day would have the cooties.
It wouid be foolish to let one person per day accidentally infect my staff and customers.
I saw no crisis. I had no fear. I abused no one.
Let me explain further . I demand my employees wear goggles, heating protection, very specific cartridge masks, and protective suits. We hang reflective ribbons off low hanging outboards, propellers, and swim ladders. We put safety chains on trailers. We tie ladders to the sides of boats. We use wheel chocks….
None by of these precautions has to do with fear.
Every one of the precautions is used to reduce the odds of a bad result.

You, mr shubrook cannot possibly guarantee you are absolutely devoid of any COVID. You cannot guarantee the air you exhale is not toxic.
We can ask you to wear a mask. “just in case”

Your contention is, “I would rather accidentally kill you than wear a mask.”

Think about that

You think your right to kill supersedes the rights of others to prevent you from murdering them.

You are a sick fuck

What's wrong with flipping a table or 2?
Did he hurt someone's feelings or some NYYC pussies feelings.
There is no more mask mandate, you can't force someone to wear one, he stood up for his rights that THIS government is trying to take away from us.
God I hope this is a joke. But in case it isn’t:
-NYYC is not a member of the organizing authority for the Newport to Bermuda Race
-The incident occurred at sail Newport
- the incident occurred in a temporary customs station set up by a completely separate government.

Thank you all for your advice and, uhh... kind words.
a real shame we aren't rid of you. I think the general consensus here with the exception of 1 person with an 8000 page thread confirming he's also a dick, is
that you should avoid racing sailboats for the duration of your miserable life..... so.. fuck off

He may be. I certainly would be proud of any of my team for standing on principles. Just... not the day before I was fucking sailing 640 miles. At that point it's just being selfish.

Some of my crew witnessed and reported this behavior. It was hot, the lines were long, crazy long, people were frustrated because there was lots to do besides standing in line. I get that. Frankly, if I'd been forced to stand in that line I probably would have told the crew this is our last race, but they gave the owners a shortcut.

But this was poor form, Shu should own up to that. Quit making excuses and just admit you lost your shit, you were wrong, and that you're sorry. Offer a donation to a good youth sailing cause and take an anger management class.

Make whatever amends you can. With time and contrition this can be forgotten.

Sigh... I'm so tired of this shallow, sloppy line of reasoning.

You can't force someone to wear a mask, but you can certainly make wearing a mask a condition of entering a particular piece of private property, or of participating in a privately-organized voluntary event, or of dealing face-to-face with officials of a sovereign government that chooses to impose this requirement, etc.
