Pig hunt on for next weekend. Looking forward to it and to taking my levergun out for some action. I sighted in at the range - 100 yards - started out with lead (cheap), and walked the sights up one click at a time. At 100 yards it looks like a click is worth about 3 inches. I switched to the hunting copper hollowpoint ammo. The copper gets 9" or 10" less drop, which is 2x what the ballistic program said. Here's the damage - zero off the center red square. Shoulder en fuego after the Copper 1 click group - probably hunt with 0 clicks at less than 100 yards. Not bad for a 130 y/o gun.

Isn't the copper just a jacket over the lead and is generally more 'slippery' in action and thru the barrel?

How are you maintaining a consistent hold?

^ I'm curious...

I'm just now leaning into long gun shooting and finding I have a lot to learn. Just learning how to properly use a scope is it's own thread!

I watched a 22 NRL match this morning and I'm willing to give it a go as a few participants shot with a Ruger RPR like I have.

I went to shoot my RPR afterwards and realized I've never cleaned my Sparrow 22 suppressor... All was good for 50 or so rounds, then shots weren't hitting the paper at all anymore. It was WAY off, like 1-2' off. Took off the quieter, turned the scope back to zero and all was right again!

I haven't been shooting in years, but I maintain a small collection of long guns, in a locked glass fronted display case. And while I have had a CCW for nearly 10 years, I have yet to purchase a handgun. Starting from longest to shortest, is my Grandfathers Belgian Browning 12 guage semi-auto that he hunted timberdoodles and pheasants with. It would be of some value, with its' Belgian steel barrel, except he installed an auto turning choke, at the barrels end, which I am told diminishes collectors value. Next longest is a Sears JC Higgins pump, 20-12 that I acquired from a real estate client when I sold her deceased fathers house, and she didn't want anything to do with guns. Her brother bent up the bumper on the Missus Pickup Truck when he made a dump run, so I figured keeping his Dads 3 guns was a fair trade. Next is a Savage 22-.410 single shot from a woman Rehab Psychiatrist, renting a house, who was also creeped out having a gun in the house. Next is a Winchester model 190, 22 semi-auto from same first client, as is the next longest Marlin 30-30 lever action. Shortest long gun I purchased myself, with a 20 round clip, 6 months before the clip became illegal in CT, and I have a permit for the clip, although the Ruger Mini 14 in Stainless, is NOT illegal, unlike the scary black gunz, aka the AR-15, which are no more deadly, than the Mini-14. When I can retire epoxy flooring toronto, in another year and a half, I will probably do some target shooting, on a 125 acre piece of woodland that's been in the family for nearly 70 years.... I am told the Mini 14 in SS, is a good boat gun for cruising, being of short barrel length, and rust resistant material. It's not real Stainless according to my magnet, but should prevent corrosion better than a normal steel barrel and action....
It sounds like you have a diverse collection of long guns with sentimental and practical value. From your description, the guns include a Belgian Browning 12 gauge semi-auto, a Sears JC Higgins pump, a Savage 22-.410 single shot, a Winchester model 190 22 semi-auto, a Marlin 30-30 lever action, and a Ruger Mini 14 in Stainless.

Each firearm has its own unique characteristics and purposes, ranging from hunting to self-defense and target shooting. The Ruger Mini 14 in Stainless, with its short barrel length and corrosion-resistant material, can indeed be suitable for use on a boat.

Overall, it seems like you have chosen firearms that hold personal significance and fulfill various shooting needs. Enjoy your collection and your future target shooting adventures on your family's woodland property.

No - solid copper is a requirement for hunting. If you wing the target and it fucks off into the bush to die and can't be found, it's not cool to leave lead in the meat - condors etc.

I'm resting the forearm of the rifle on a sandbag and shooting from a seated position. The copper bullets are lighter and fly 25% faster - so there's no surprise that the drop is less. What concerns me is that the ballistics model shows a 4.5" difference between the lead and the copper rounds, but I'm getting about 10". The copper is a hollowpoint and the lead is a flat nose, so maybe it's a ballistic coefficient issue.

I'm pretty proud of the first copper group - labeled "Copper 4", because that was the setting on the sight. I'm not sure I can repeat that in the wild - I'll be lucky to get close to "Copper 1" - which I'm going to claim to be a 4" group. My trusty guide better get us close in - be wewy, wewy sneakie...

Solid copper rounds? I had no idea... but I like the premise and nice groups!

What are you using for an optic with 'copper' settings??

I've never seen one but it 'looks like' 45-70 is all over the place in velocity range. Stay away from anything that is potentially transonic. That's some beta I got at the 22 match today...

I wouldn't think a suppressor would go bad that quickly. I have several .22 cans that have 100s of rounds though them with no cleaning and no accuracy loss.

I have a Sandman suppressor that I'm told I'll never need to take apart!

I've had this little Sparrow for almost 2 years, fits several 22s, and it probably had 1K+ rounds thru it - oops! I did have to find a kind way to press the baffle out with a wooden dowel and the floor...

22 NRL June Course of Fire: Campfire Stories - 120 secs, 12 rounds

Hanging targets @:
76 yds: 2"
87 yds: 2.5"

From standing, On the start signal, you will build a position on one quadrant of the tire and engage the targets near to far with 1 shot each. Then move to another quadrant of the tire and repeat engagement.

Campfire Stories.jpg

Then there's Summertime Flies: 120 secs, 10 rounds
45 yds: ¼” & ½” on a KYL rack
60 yds: ¾” & 1” on a KYL rack

On the start signal, you will take a prone supported position and engage the targets with 1 shot each, large to small, far to near (1”, ¾”, ½”, ¼”). You will then switch to support side and engage the targets with 1 shot each in reverse order, near to far, small to large (¼”, ½”, ¾”, 1”). You will then transition to strong side again and engage the near ¼” and then the far ¾” targets with 1 shot each.

^ What! Are you fucking shitting me? ^

No optic - just a buckhorn rear and a standard pokey blade thing for the front.

I think adjusting the trigger made a big difference. It's 130 years old and was very heavy - 8lbs pull. I dissassembled it and polished the sear, and re-assembled with a little grease on it. Much more respectable 3 lbs now, but no "feel" for the break - it just goes - every shot a surprise!

Are you a GOA member? In scary brace news,

Round one went to the nutters

And the new rule seems to be that GOA members can have pistol braces but anyone else risks prosecution.

SAF Lifer; they also have a temporary injunction against the ATF. Likewise, the Firearms Policy Coalition (just joined for free). An emasculated NRA continues to be a no-show.

Most legal scholars feel the BATFEIOU's rule making 10-40M Muricans felons overnight is unConstitutional, and will eventually be found so. Not that the Constitution accounts for much anymore.

Some pundits are advising pistol brace holders to consider killing someone, as that will be punished much less than the mere possession of an evvvvvvvvil pistol brace. [/sarc off]

That should be more funny and less true. The whole thing just makes me wonder whether my new battlefield .22 would be more upsetting to Senator Feinstein if I installed some kind of brace. Or maybe a thing that goes up?

:) , knock 'em down !
, don't forget the pics.

-------------------

:( ,mine is still in prison.

, been doing a bit of research on cleaning.

? does anyone know of an ultrasonic with a _vertical_ tank ?

Careful.

I was told by a company rep that my SIG dogballs muffler should NOT be put in an ultrasonic tank. Supposedly, it can harm the baffles.

Need to research the care and cleaning of the muffler, as I've got about 400 rounds through it now. However, I've seen no degregation in accuracy - yet. And the sound of the round hitting the plywood backer is still significantly louder than the shot.

I've had a muffler in jail for damn near a year now. Apparently, our masters at the BATFEIOU are taking their own sweet, taxpayer-paid time to process the electronic paperwork. Because we suck, and they hate us.

BTW: We all know that mufflers are susceptible to carbon fouling and thread seizure. I've had great luck with very high temp copper anti-seize. I put that #### on everything.
