Is this a code word for some sort nefarious purpose?
When President Joe Biden comes knocking at your door to confiscate your AR-14, “Where’s your gun.”   Our answer will be “I lost it in a tragic boating accident, it’s at the bottom of the ocean!”

Went to the range today for the first time........first time in 45 years. The first 20 or so rounds were not impressive. Then it all came back and got a little better.

Backstay, never bought a suit, never went to Vegas
It's the adjustable stock that makes a Mini 14 (or a 10/22) an assault weapon.

I think that's correct in CT, but not sure.  AR15 prohibited, but Mini 14 okay, with standard wood stock.  Which, as I said in one of OP's is stoooopid, because the Ruger is every bit as lethal as the AR.....

So...........ammunition............whats good? Shot Speer Lawman .40 180gr today but shot all I had. It behaved really well so I don't see a reason to change but what's the assembled wisdom (I have no interest in reloading besides Glock said no reloaded or you void warranty).

Jacketed Hollow Point for home defense.  I like Federal brand, if available.  Whatever you use, test it at the range.  Some guns have issues with feeding Flat Point (Trunicated) rounds.  As mentioned before, Glock's (and many other guns) have a tendency to Stove Pipe if shot with a limp wrist.

Good warning on the limp wrist, I paid attention and no problems. I was surprised after about 20 rounds it was pretty familiar again.  A little fine tuning and getting used to the glasses etc and it’ll be fine. Oddly enough and contrary to my assumption.....so far anyway......the glasses that gave me a good target picture with a little blur on the front sight was better accuracy than the glasses with a clear front sight and a little blurry target. Might have been more familiar as the time went by with the old shooting stance and sight picture etc.......another thing I found interesting was the sight picture difference. A old USMC buddy of mine told me to pay attention to the sight picture changes. When we shot 45+ years ago the ideal sight picture was aligned with the target just on top of the front sight. I did that and you notice all my first rounds were low. He said modern sight picture says just barely cover the target with the sights aligned.......when I shifted to that idea the rounds were on target. Don’t know how true that is but I’ll pay attention as I become more familiar with the gun.

One really nice thing was the range was excellent. Clean, orderly, efficient staff and checkin/checkout, well lit.  I found it refreshing to shoot without getting hit on top of the head with a stick or being shouted at 2” from my ear by the range master.

Sight image 1 is the so called six o'clock hold. Very accurate for shooting at the same size target at the same distance.

Sight image is POA/POI point of aim/point of impact. My choice

Sight image 3 is the so called combat hold.

It's not a bad idea to try to intentionally limp wrist the gun to see if/how it malfunctions. This will be ammo-dependent, of course.

Regarding the sight picture, as long as I'm on the paper I worry far more about getting tight groups than I do about group placement. If you can get tight groups, by definition you're doing all the hard stuff well (trigger control, flinch, consistent sight picture, grip, stance, etc). After that, moving the group is just a matter of adjusting the sights and/or the sight picture until it's where you want it.

Most ranges have gone pretty professional. They know if it’s not kept nice, people won’t come.  As for the Military Range, they were used to giving guns to hyperactive 18 year olds.  I’ll have to see if I can find the video of Timo42 scarring the hell out of the ceiling with Charlie Foxtrot’s Ruger Super Redhawk!  He was shooting it single action.  When he brought the muzzle down to sit the target with his finger in the trigger, it discharged. Fortunately, he had it pointed down range. No harm, and the RO didn’t notice!

That first picture was pretty funny but nice grouping anyway. If you're consistently hitting the wrong spot, hitting the right one is just details.

Part of it is. The state law you posted about specifies centerfire, so anything chambered in .22lr is exempt. Yours is exempt because the stock is not adjustable, regardless of the material used to make it. I was referencing the most widely-supported version of proposed federal law, which specifically says "regardless of caliber of ammunition accepted" by the gun.

Now that ISAIAS has thankfully fizzled from a Cat 2 to a mere Tropical Storm...

https://www.luckygunner.com/labs/self-defense-ammo-ballistic-tests/

Lucky Gunner's self-defense ammo report is just about the go-to source for self-defense ammunition performance information. Or you can ask the local Sheriff's Deputies and Cops what's in their guns. The Cop Shops usually do exhaustive testing on their carry rounds based on the conditions they're likely to face. (i.e.: North Dakota arctic survival gear v Floriduhian Aloha Shirts.) Plus, if you ever get taken to court, you can always say it's what the cops use, and I trust the cops.

PB; This was one of my favorite ranges before I escaped from Cali five (my gawd) years ago.  And it's right up the Freeway from you.

Their policy on rental guns was very fair: $10 let you shoot any of their many firearms (22 pistols up to ARs) they had as long as you used their reasonably priced ammunition.

I don't know why Scooter's idiot toy insists on posting this image I had copied to Facedbook.

I belong to a sportsman club here. We have a trap range and a rifle range, out to 200yds.

Annual cost is 40 bucks.

The rifle range has a shooting shed were you can build a fire in the wood stove in the winter and shoot out the openings. We have several benches and all the sand bags you could ask for. Also a pistol/.22 range.

It's a little slice of heaven.

Hopefully this link works, it is centered on the shed.

And if you dont want to spend the money just down the road a few miles is a free state range with several different ranges and out to 600yds
