I have no idea how fast we were going odds are most anybody who’s ever sailed a Bigger J boat has gone faster but
while playing on a J-22 in a north west breeze out in front of Southern Yacht Club we rode planing with the chute up on the face of a huge roller for so long it took two hours to get back to me n front of the club.
we knew we were going too damned far but the ride was just perfect
the next day the wind was gone and it didnt return until the worlds were over
maybe it was 1990? I really don’t know for certain but it was between 1988 and 1994
12.5 on a J/29 FROB. The wind picked up on the last leg of the last race of the last regatta, so we figured, why not? Beaming, we flew past a J/35 that opted to keep their jib, crossed the finish, and then the kite blew up.
12.5 in a 35 knot puff yesterday on a J/35, under main only, reaching back to the dock in Annapolis from a cancelled race. We've gone faster under the spinnaker in surfing conditions, ~14.5 or so, but the mainsail-only thing was pretty wild.
