Out of curiosity, how many here know there is a replica of the original America in the wild, sailing I believe on the US NE coast? I was talking recently to someone who was amazed none of us had heard of it. I realise it may be a biased sample here.
I'd be very surprised if this was correct.

Thanks, in fact I'd already read that. It confirms there have been 3 replicas. The latest (1995 build) sometimes does whale watching in SD but also leads a more adventurous life:

https://www.cruisingworld.com/schooner-america-replica-sets-out-around-world/ took in AC35 in Bermuda and various points on the US right coast.

90 days ago, in SD. No more recent track. https://www.vesselfinder.com/vessels/details/367375550

Elsewhere on SA is a personal photograph by a Connecticut sailor showing America slipping down a river that looks a lot more New England than SoCal and was confirmed as such by the photographer. It had a 2023 timestamp but possibly that misled me, it seems more likely it may have been 2016. I am not going to link it since it seems unfair to draw him into an argument here.

Thanks, that's the 1967 build, described by Troy Sears in the Hamish Ross piece as broken up. Not entirely broken up, then. Somebody has thrown a lot of money into this rebuild, do we know who?

She was sold by auction 2018 in Italy and a cryptic post on the Wooden Boat Forum shows a couple of shots of the rebuild taking place maybe others know more as a project of this size does not usually evade the public eye.

Launch day.

THIS YACHT HAS BEEN PUT ON AUCTION AT THE EXTREMELY APPEALING FIGURE OF 100.000 € . the auction will be held in La Spezia ,Italy on july 31st 2018. call for further informations. Built by Goudy & Stephens of Boothbay, Maine it is the first replica of the most famous yacht of the world ,the legendary America of 1851 . It was built for Rudolph J.Schaefer Jr. head of Schaefer Brewing . Her hull design is the original George Steers plan and all the drawings of the re-creation are of Sparkman & Stephens : design n° 1897 Last refit 1996 Flag: BermudaAmerica needs a thorough restoration HISTORY : Olin Stephens, one of the yachting world’s foremost designers, and Everett Morris, a prominent sailing historian met with R. Schaefer at NY Yacht Club in winter 1966 and gave birth to the idea, deciding that the yacht not only would have the same design and specifications of the “America”,but it would be constructed by using many of the original materials and tools that existed at that time. Of course, below deck would be a slightly different story, engine, systems and the usual 20th century comforts and conveniences. This replica was launched on the 3rd of May 1967, 116 years to the day after the original was launched. Attention: This boat should not be confused with the replica that was built and launched in 1995 by Scarano Boatbuilding of Albany, NY for Ray Giovanni and was operated by him for commercial events until his death. The replicas had several modifications from the original design including widening the beam by 4 feet to accommodate interior layouts. The original design had only one skylight so three were added to bring light into the interior of the yacht. A third replica was built in Varna, Bulgaria in 2005. Christened Skythia, the boat's home port today is Rostock,Germany CONSTRUCTION & ACCOMMODATIONS Planking - double planked firFrames - laminated double sawn oakKeel - white oakDeck Beams - laminated spruceDeck - Burma teakFasteners - bronze Accommodations : 4 guests 7 crew EQUIPMENTS Main Engines: 325hp Detroit Diesel

Perhaps his issue being that he is concentrating on American sailors, and the USA hasn't produced any in that time.
I don't mean that pejoratively, but USA performance at the Olympics has been poor, no greats, and at the AC there have been a lot of imported sailors representing them

Even if we, the US, had won more medals in the last 20 years, it wouldn’t really make a difference in terms of a hero. Olympic sailing is simply not as important to the general sailing audience in the US as it is elsewhere. That said, US Failing has been abjectly awful in doing any promotion for those who have won medals. Only time they really do that is when they can use it was press release noise to support some sponsor. It’s not consistent, at all.

Sure, it would have been better if Americans actually sailed in the America’s Cup for America.

Interesting that Jobson thinks Cayard is the past, when in fact he’s still winning major Star regattas, and making it look easy. He’s also running the Olympic team.

Jobson was a VP and then President of US Failing, along with being a relative media mogul (in sailing terms) so if anyone had the ability to set a course correction 10+ years ago, it was him.

On this day (Feb 14) - there are better vids but found this one first

Feb. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Bloomberg's Linzie Janis reports on BMW-Oracle's victory in the 33rd America's Cup off the coast of Valencia, Spain. Software billionaire Larry Ellisons team, with a motorized 68-meter (223-foot) carbon fiber wing sail, yesterday beat Ernesto Bertarellis defending-champion Alinghi of Switzerland to take a winning 2-0 lead in the best-of-three series.

Having sailed on that boat for many years and spending much of it down below packing kites upwind it's in the best shape now that it has been in a long time and definitely the cleanest.
You don't happen to know Kenyon Kellogg do you? He would have been up there with you! The day I came aboard in 2018 the boat was very smooth running from a "no prior experience" on a 12 guy. Only issue we encountered really was the vang track ripping out from the deck and having to ease on the tension maneuvering. I'm sure it was looked at between then and now. Incredible experience.
