Have the sailing Olympics ever been hosted in this town?

Sweden has only hosted the Olympic Games once, in 1912. The sailing event was held at Nynashamm.
Sweden won a medal in every class. Although, the Bronze medal in the 6 meter class consisted of only three boats!
The most competitive class was the 12 meter class (The same class that was used in the America's Cup for 30 years, albeit with updated rules). There were 10 boats in the 12 meter class with 10 crew each. Can you imagine the current Olympic Committee allowing a class with 10 crew today?? Sweden won the silver medal in Erna Signe. The gold was won by Norway, so that would likely have been quite the grudge match!
There were 2 races over 2 days on July 20 and 21. Both were light wind. The Race Committee records that the first day was "Beautiful weather with a light easterly breeze. 6- 9 knots" The second day was only 4-6 knots but they stil got a race in. Norway's Magna IX won both races.......she must have been a light air goddess!

The venue for the 1952 Sailing Olympics was Harmaja, near Helsinki. Sailing was done on triangular type Olympic courses. The start was made in the center of a set of 8 numbered marks that were places in a circle. During the starting procedure the sequence of the marks was communicated to the sailors.
Two course areas were created in front of Helsinki. One for the Finn just outside the island Liuskasaari. The Finn course was 5.4 nm long and triangular in shape. For the keelboats a course area near the Harmaja lighthouse was used. A 13.1 nm course was set for Star, Dragon, 5.5 & 6 Meter just over one nm South of the lighthouse.

So is your point that you are suggesting that the "where in the world" is Harmaja? or just that they should have used the Aero instead of the Finn?
If Hork doesnt show, do I get to take the helm on the basis of correctly identifying Hyderbad when Hork put up his first image?

Where in the world is clearly not in Finland because Finland is not in Scandinavia. I just got bored with randomly guessing places in Sweden that didn't look anything like the mystery photo, so I took a side trip to Helsinki. If somebody doesn't start a new witw I might have to post some fun facts of when the Olympics were in Tallinn, or post some photos of RS Aero sailing in Estonia which is also not in Scandinavia.So is your point that you are suggesting that the "where in the world" is Harmaja? or just that they should have used the Aero instead of the Finn?

For the record, I am not advocating that Finland should not use the Finn in the Olympics. That would be as crazy as Portugal not using the PortStar or Solomon Islands not using the Solo.

Hi Hork,
The Stockholm archipelago consists of approximately 24,000 islands and Im not sure how many hundreds of square miles.......just out of curiosity (because I'm all guessed out) , which town and island was your original image from? Just to close the case, so to speak.
Nynashamn is probably among the better known in sailing circles....but it is a small town with an enormous cruise ship terminal and a very distinctive red church with green steeple , so I was not convinced we had nailed down the precise location.
Oh......and .......I dont think my neck can handle another upside down image. Try posting them upside down?

I know. Not many people go looking on New Zealand magazine websites for stories about sailing in Estonia in 2018.
The Estonians were very quick off the mark in adopting the RS Aero. There's an interesting story somewhere on the web about how a prominent Estonian laser eye surgeon built the fleet. I could be wrong but I think they sail out of the former 1980 Olympic sailing site in Tallinn. There was a big group of Estonians at Garda in 2016 when I was there.
