Hmmm - just thinking aloud - @shebeen lives in Africa, maybe the bridge is in Africa - darkness of conscious movement suggests Jung who did travel in East Africa - Kenya and Uganda - bridge's name was changed - names of lots of stuff were changed in former colonies after independence - still struggling with the NY state name connection.
on the right track and so getting HOTTER!

the NY state connection is not that convoluted. There are plenty of clues here already and this guy knows the answer

LOL - I had it figured it out (by googling "river sailing club south africa") just before you posted the photo of the Bills.

And of course the double FF in the place name you didn't white out would have been an easy way to solve it if I had thought about that avenue!
And NOW I see there is a colorized version of the original postcard on eBay.

And I see the bridge in the distance is now the Steve Biko Bridge, but was formerly known as the John Vorster Bridge.

And you did give us a clue that could have led to the Black Consciousness movement but I totally misinterpreted it.

Duh - so many great clues that I didn't find a way to use!

Correct, was scared it was spoonfeeding in the end!
thought some of this might come up on google search, but here is the entry for the bridge building i used.

I have never actually sailed here, would definitely have driven over the bridge at a time though.

Looks like the Watch Hill Yacht Club, Watch Hill RI. They had really good hamburgers last time I was there. (Well after this photo was taken.). This boat may have been tied up on the other side of the clubhouse:

This is what Watch Hill YC looked like in the 1930s. The present day club house looks very different so kudos to you @PaulK in getting it so quickly! The helm is yours.
