It's a trade off. If you locate the rudder the correct distance forward of the stern, it can reduce the stern wave and move it aft a bit, extending the effective sailing length.I never understood those designs with the rudder so far forward - like putting the fletching on an arrow way in from the end.

And no-one has mentioned the fiery cross a 1950's NZ Jim Young version of L Francis' concept of an ultimate sailing machine with a spade rudder and a canting fin keel...... She was designed in 52, but built in spare time between paying customers jobs, so launched in 58.
