Sounds like my post about searching all properties owned by living past Presidents should be expanded to living Vice Presidents… I’m up for that.

I’m not gonna hold my breath for the bullshitter caucus to hop on board that train.

I am just waiting for the Faithful to point out it is within the purview of Vice Presidents to declassify documents.

But, I have no doubt they will remain silent regarding President Biden being able to do so when he was VP.

I have it on good authority that Jimmy Carter would leave one special Classified Document in each of the Habitat For Humanity Home he built as a gift.

I worked on a couple of Habitat houses, Jimmeh called up trucks from some unmarked gov't agency to fill the walls with paper insulation.

Now we know where they were coming from!

I don't believe either Biden or Pence deliberately took those documents, and I know they were mishandled by staff. And the record keepers are most likely overworked and underpaid. With that said I just completed the yearly required courses and exams on security and handling of documents et all. Three really boring ones since my security level and work means I have one thing to keep track of and it's all digital on secure servers. Our tax $ goes to pay the $70 for me and all the hundreds of others like me. I would like to know if all those who are actually in the presence of and handling these documents are getting the same training? The penalties for fucking up start at dismissal. Cover letters and secured containers are mandatory.

So I know the procedures and I also know I would rather be shot than have to deal with endless boxes of documents as my daily job. Has to be a better way. I dunno, like PDF those suckers with intelligent searches you only need one box. Maybe two.

You really need a classification authority that has pushing back against the tendency to overclassify as its mission. More paper pushing is an unattractive remedy though. How many documents get individually classified when their associated security risks only exist in aggregate? Modern analytic methods make so much of this seem anachronistic and an example of CYA run amok.

How much of this (Biden and Pence) is just the government fetish for protecting themselves from scrutiny by classifying everything? Trump clearly lied (his lawyer signed that there weren't any more) and intended (folder in a Mara Lago display case) to magpie the documents. The rest may just indicate our process is out of control, with estimates of 50 million documents being classified each year.

I just finished a book about Kelly Johnson the lead designer of the SR-71 amongst others. It mentions after he died his widow called up Lockheed to grab all of his papers. Turns out his garage was filled with classified drawings for nearly every project he worked on.
Kelly’s document hoarding was way worse imo than what we are seeing now. Imagine if the Ruskies broke into his garage and found the drawings for the SR-71 and U-2?

I'm off the hook. My PDF of the Graybook was properly declassified. Of course they didn't do this until 1972, just in case Datsun decided to counter our efforts by selling cheap and fuel-efficient sports cars.
