Who has the best national anthem?

For me the SSB (and by association the flag) has been overused commercially e.g. with huge displays at car dealers and at sporting events, and misappropriated by sleazy self-serving politicians of both major parties. Even in Baltimore the home of the SSB, fans shout out "O" at Orioles games. Some say it's just enthusiasm but if you did it in church for O Come All Ye Faithful it would be at least a faux pas. So for me it has come to stand for many things that are less than what it, IMHO, ought to represent.

I actually prefer the Canadian anthem, especially when sung by Roger Doucet at hockey games back in the day.

I am (pleasantly) surprised by the number of people who named La Marseillaise. If you understood the words, you may reconsider, though... It really is a war song.
Regarding lyrics of a national anthem, the one I prefer is the Spanish anthem...

I'd be happier if they'd quit changing the fucking lyrics.

It is more than a war song…..it’s a song of revolution…..which depending on which side of the revolution you sit on is either a song of defiance or a filthy terrorist anthem. As a proud colonial I prefer the former. 😆😎🇺🇸

I have 2 issues with the SSB - very difficult to sing and that it's played at all most every event and regularly butchered by singers who are determined to deliver the absolutely mostest trillingest version ever. Either limit it to those who can sing with a band accompaniment or find something that is singable by a crowd.

Ditto for having giant flags everywhere including covering the field. It morphs from patriotism to nationalism and that isn't a good thing.

edit: the scene from Casablanca is a classic and I have a good friend who is a ringer for the woman singing with tears in her eyes.

He didn't.

Mindless flag waving is not patriotism.
Perhaps I interpreted his meaning too broadly. We’ll see.

America the Beautiful is a patriotic song that calls into perspective the notion of brotherhood and social justice inspired by the beauty the author viewed from Pikes Peak. Sometimes called Americas Hymn. Is that too patriotic? Here sung by Ray Charles.
