Funny thing, a couple weeks ago I spend almost a week in the hospital with a close family member who had an abdominal surgery (ie painful AF). IV dilaudin for 3 days tapered off, after 5 days pain-free, nearly perfect recovery.

Either you have the bad luck to have a hospital practice with very poor pain service, or you got tagged as seeking drugs. Either way, says nothing whatever about current US medical practices.

This is a standard protocol, and no, it is not - "Thanks, Obama." Thank the AMA, ACS, ACP, and ASHP for trying not to get people dependent on pain medication after surgery.

If your wife were still experiencing pain requiring additional relief, they would have given you another three days of the current Rx, a lower dose, or prescribed something else to help manage it.

MIL had a hip replacement, was off the serious shit after two days, and managed the pain with APAP and ibuprofen. I get it; spine surgery is a little more invasive, but still..

Hell, my old dentist must have been working on commission for them. I would get a bottle of Oxy for just walking in! I must have had 5 full bottles of the shit and the dates were all going out so in the old pill recycle it went.
