Why did J Boats drop the J100?

That brings a different meaning to the thread title!

I dry-sailed my J/92 for awhile using a single-point lift.  Rod J or Alan calculated the balance point for me, and I was able to lift it from the aft two keel bolts.  It was a lighter and shorter boat than the J/100 but a bit taller, and that was the challenge.  If the hoist was two-blocked the keel bulb would just clear the trailer.  I had access to a three-ton hoist but you'd need more.  So you'd have some research to do.

That J/95 in the top photo looks like the right boat for your situation.

The only problem is prices of the J/95 is still a high compared to the j/100 and considering my J/100 is paid off I don’t really want to get into boat payments.

I looked into getting a shoal Keel for the j/100 but no longer available from Mars. Another j/100 in st Pete Area has shoal version and seemed much more manageable.  Mars offered their torpedo bulb option but don’t want to ruin original j/100 keel trying it. Florida problems i guess....

There are two sets of molds. US watercraft was the last to use them in the US and there also is a set in France. As far as sailing fun. . The 100 will take up to a 140 head, sail and will go up wind with no issues. Way faster that a J29. Throw a 1000 sq ft asail on a sprint and downwind is covered. All that at an 84 rating. It's an awesome boat !!

Considering that most people who start learning to sail at a very young age usually start out on Optimist class dinghies which are

1-person-only-boats, there does not seem to be anything standing in the way of learning to sail alone.
And since you mentioned that you enjoy joining social games when playing Badminton:
When you decide to get into sailing, it might be a good idea anyway to sign up for a sailing class in your area where you'll be taught the proper basics and automatically meet like-minded people. And just like that, you'll be meeting people who might be looking for someone to sail with, as well.

And last but not least there are many people who very much enjoy the solitude of one-handed sailing (i.e. by themselves on a boat). Other people prefer to experience the team-spirit and bonding aspect when sailing with others. Which you'll prefer you have to find out, so go and start learning how to sail!

In an effort to salvage this thread and bring it back on course, does anyone have any other suggestions/ideas for being able to drysail the J/100? 

I am facing problem of finding a slip (very long wait list) in the Tampa Area and am giving serious consideration to keeping it closer to where I live which would likely require either keeping on boat lift or finding dry stack marina willingness to launch in fashion shown in pics.  I have not gotten approval from J boats to convert to single point hoist. If all efforts fail I will likely but the boat up for sale and get something shoal draft and keep in my slip. Would love to hear how others have handled the situation. Ultimately, the J/100 is a great boat for the money and don’t think any other design could match it at the moment (besides possibly the new J/9) but that shall be seen...

You can single point it.  Depending on the bolt spacing you may have to have a plate made but a single lift point is not a problem.  You may have to come through the cabin top with an access port.

I would love to see what others have done to creat single point hoist setup for the j/100. As I mentioned J boats “officially” could not advise on a system but were able to give me Center of gravity location. Would nice if someone had pics or drawings of single point hoist setup.

In one major area regatta my program was awarded with 12 Citizen Sailing Chronographs as "The Boat of the Day" that I distributed to the crew.

All of my programs over many years regularly have podium finishes in major regattas so I do not need to keep trophies that limp noodle dick morons like you would covet. Citizen

I have a J100 shoal draft keel, just removed from my J100, for sale if anyone is interested.

Wanting 1.25' shallower keel indicates that you are sailing in waters that are probably not deep enough for the J/100.

Whatever the cost, changing the relatively short draft keel (5.75') to even shallower draft (4.5') will substantially reduce future resale price and performance of the boat.

love the pics, the 105 looks like a good choice. We have typically light air in San Diego, so the boat having 150 genoa tracks and a decent shaped 150 is a plus. She has Black Widow on the bottom now.

The 100 looks great. We saw your old boat w/o you on it and figured you had either moved to LA or got a new boat. Julie was getting beat by the 140 so I'm trying coachroof mounted inboard tracks: less horsepower but much tighter sheeting angle and only 5" of sheet from side to side.

I have not been able to find a owners group or association for the J/100 either online or facebook.  Perhaps that was because of the lack of one design following but I think it would be nice to have access to a network of other owners and be able to share details of rigging/sails/optimizations that others have done with their boats.  How do the owners groups start for the other classes? and any J/100 sailors here willing to start one... i imagine it would only help preserve resale values of this truly classic J boat design.

Do the molds still exist?

In 2009, Pearson (Then Pearson composites, changed to Pearson Marine Group, and now?) in Warren RI, created the hull and deck, which were shipped a few miles south to International Marine Composites (Bristol) where the boat was completed.

When we went up to check on the boat, our deck and hull were still separate, but just about all of the deck hardware had been installed and in the hull the bulkheads, engine, fuel tank were in place.

While I was there they wanted me to sign off on the location for our genoa track, since it was nonstandard (at the time).  

There was an untouched J/100 hull and deck sitting next to ours and it was interesting to compare the bare hull against ours.

Anyway, if the molds still exist they might be in this shot.  With Pearson shut down, who knows, but International Marine is still finishing boats for J.  So it may still be doable.

I agree that it may be doable - they were last kitted out to be like good girl/ bad girl....i have a 2011  - great to sail, quality of build C- YMMV 

she's had 12k worth of intrusion rebuild (rot)! boats....

My understanding is that the molds that were in the US no longer exist.  The molds, as I understand it, were at US Watercraft, and were sold/cleaned out/destroyed as part of the bankruptcy proceedings.  You might check with the Borges who are back in business under the name Squirrel Works dba Waterline systems (or they were anyway).  Or Peter Johnstone, who purchased the assets of Alerion.  Who knows, one of them may have ended up with the tooling.
