If you are really into glass a visit to The Museum of Glass in Tacoma is worth a visit. They have a hot shop where you can watch glass being blown and guest artists from around the world visit, lecture, and blow glass. http://museumofglass.org/ There is Chihuly glass there and in the Tacoma Art Museum nearby http://www.tacomaartmuseum.org/. Chihuly is a Tacoma native so you see his work in many parts of the city.

Okay, since you don't do standard tourist, here's my museum recommendation:

Take the ferry from downtown Seattle to Winslow-Bainbridge or Edmonds (north of Seattle) to Kingston and drive to Keyport.

If you're into aircraft, I'd recommend Boeing's Future of Flight museum in Everett, about 40 minutes north of Seattle:

And since we are throwing out lots of ideas, a trip to Hurricane Ridge near Port Angeles can be fun. Only open on the weekends and even then, the road could be closed due to snow.

I actually volunteered to take Ad sailing in post #5 in the SA thread, days and days ago. For some reason he wasn't entranced by the idea. This was the middle of January, it can be nice in winter.

Not sure where you get your info from. We race weekly year round (as in all winter) in Vancouver and West Vancouver, BC. As one can tell by Ish's video, some winter days are lovely for day sailing and or overnight trips if one has a heater or a very snuggly bunk-mate.

We even have some winter days which are golf friendly. : )

Dang, I must have missed that memo. I've been foolishly sailing the keel off my boat every winter up here, along with most of the other sailors I hang with.

Some of our best racing is done here in the winter. If AD wanted to do a little racing, we are starting the South Sound Series at Tacoma on Dec 7th with the next race Jan 4th.

Well, I guess you may have mistaken my other posting for cold and snow. Now that I look at it, it does have some resemblance.

We'll hope for the best. I don't think we have ever invited someone out and had to cancel because of weather.

Of course, we have ended up sailing in some pretty extreme weather.

True. In fact, I'm told there may be people in Seattle who don't even sail in the SUMMER (although I've seen no proof of that).

My point being: there's an active winter sailing scene up in Seattle, Bullhumper.... ;-)

Thank you all for the suggestions! I really appreciate it. It is great that I will know of some things to see that she does know.

She is a non sailor, though very supportive of the sailing I do now, just with the blind team. So she knows I want to meet some of you and see some boats, so I don't think I will push the issue with planes and car viewing as well!

The gardens and glass works look awesome, and a general look around Seattle and Vancouver. Still working out times and stuff but will be in contact shortly Kim, Ish and Bob.

Victoria has a good Maritime Museum, but amazingly there is no one definitive maritime museum in the Puget Sound area that I know of. Seattle has MOHAI (Museum of History and Industry) http://www.mohai.org/. Tacoma WA has the Foss Waterway Seaport http://www.fosswaterwayseaport.org/. Gig Harbor WA has the Harbor History Museum http://www.harborhistorymuseum.org/. Astoria OR has the Columbia River Maritime Museum http://www.crmm.org/.

Directly next door to MOHAI is the Center for Wooden Boats, there is a lot of interesting stuff to poke at there.

I have tons of volunteer hours at CWB (I'm a volunteer instructor there) and would be happy to take an Aussie out for a sail on one of their boats. Lake Union is fun to poke around on.

On the Oregon coast I really like Manzanita, which is directly south of Cannon Beach. The landscape continues to get better down that way. Then you might as well held another 30km and go to Cape Meares Lighthouse.

IStream, touristy stuff but I dont do normal tourist. I love traveeling to experince what the locals do. My girl is from Portland and is back there for a bit to help her family. So I am doing christmas there but would love to find some stuff to do she may not know of.

Gold Beach and the Fern Grotto via the Avenue of the Giants if the weather isn't wet I think they still let people out there in the winter. So far zero rain south of Portland driest year so far on record we do need rain but if this holds out you should be able to check out Gold Beach and also the Fern Grotto via Avenue of the Giants if you make it to the very norther end of CA coast. Gold beach is basically right at the CA border.

Wont make it that far south Bulb.
