You've been forced to race ORC. You want a larger J-boat to do the job.

Choices are J-130, J-133 and J-145.

Which one and why?
I really like the 145, but the 133 seems to do better under both ORC and IRC. 130 is getting on and years and looking at the ones on the market you could be putting a bunch of money into one and end up near the price of a decent 133. 145 is up a bit in running costs but if I had the coin, it would be hard choice. Heart says 145, but head says 133.

Naturally, it depends on what races are on the agenda.

J/133 should fit the bill and work well for both WL and offshore. Eats miles and is quite comfortable. This is the sensible choice.

J/145 would be a fun project and a sweet offshore ride. A friend had one, claiming it was the only boat that scared him downwind in a breeze. Traded it for a J/133. I've been thinking of getting a cheap one, modernizing the deck layout, and replacing the interior. It should be both faster and cheaper than a comparable modern equivalent.

So for me, it's the 145. Same reason I went to the J/111 even if I collected more silver with the J/109.

Why is the 122 not on your list? Too small? It’s better under ORC than anything you listed.

I haven’t been blown away by the 133 under ORC…. But….. they’re definitely better under ORC than the 130 and 145.

Look at getting the Genoa size optimized because I bet there’s some room to be gained on the rating in that area. I would also ensure you’re getting the most weight out of the rig as the boats can be tender.

Too small.

Edit: does the 133 fly a Genoa or a large 110+ jib?

Check out how much jib track is left there.
